FILMMAKER IN PERSON!
German filmmaker Helga Fanderl returns to Anthology to present a specially-selected program drawn from her vast body of silent Super-8mm films (she has made around 1,000 short films since 1986). A one-time student of both Peter Kubelka and Robert Breer, Fanderl makes her work impressionistically and intuitively, in response to the rhythms, forms, textures, and colors she encounters, and always limits herself to in-camera editing, so that each film becomes a reflection of the process of its own creation. Her practice is distinguished as well by her commitment to a particular way of presenting her work in public: generally projecting the films herself from within the screening space, Fanderl conceives of each screening program as a unique “montage” of individual works that together comprise a kind of ephemeral, never-to-be-repeated “film” in their own right (an approach made possible by the sheer multitude of pieces she’s created over the years).

Constellations Super-8 (2009 - 2024)
Since 1986 Helga Fanderl has created a body of work consisting of around 1000 short films in Super 8. Fanderl uses the Super 8 camera as an instrument of vision and creation. Inspired by movements, rhythms, forms, textures, color, light, and shadow, she shapes images and time in situ as a spontaneous gesture, transferring her perceptions, feelings, and ideas to the unseen filmstrip inside the camera. There is no postproduction. She presents her films in ever-changing combinations so that, because of the different compositions, the individual films remain open to interpretation.
For the Ann Arbor presentation, Fanderl has selected 19 films of different lengths, years, and places of production, mounting a unique ephemeral “film.” Since Super 8 is a more intimate medium, and not really a cinema format, Helga Fanderl likes to set up the projector in the middle of the audience and to project the films herself.

Helga Fanderl präsentiert ihr 2023 bei Hatje Cantz erschienenes Künstlerbuch Konstellationen Super 8. Mit reichem Bild- und Textmaterial und einem Werkverzeichnis gibt es Einblick in die ästhetische Besonderheit und Komplexität ihrer Arbeit mit dem Filmformat Super 8. Es erhellt Entstehung und Entwicklung, Prozess und Materialität, Form und poetische Anmutung dieser Praxis. In den Filmen, Programmvariationen und raumbezogenen Vorführweisen der Künstlerin geht es um die Permanenz des Flüchtigen. Kurze Texte von Helga Fanderl und anderer Autor:innen ebenso wie Filmbilder, Fotos und Dokumente vermitteln und reflektieren die Facetten ihrer Arbeit. Auf deren Dichte und Rhythmen spielt die grafische Gestaltung des Buches an. Nach der Buchpräsentation ist das Filmprogramm Konstellationen Super 8 zu sehen.

À l’occasion de la sortie du DVD Constellations Super 8 de Helga Fanderl chez Re:Voir, Helga Fanderl présente un programme composé d’une sélection de ses films Super 8 créés en tourné-monté. Il s’agit de films silencieux qui, pour la durée de la projection, forment un « film » éphémère. Le dialogue entre les films individuels très courts et leurs motifs, rythmes, cor-respondances et contrastes représente quelque peu l’œuvre de la cinéaste dans son ensemble. Les lieux et les dates des films sont variés.
Comme d’habitude, Helga Fanderl projette à partir de la salle et rend ainsi la projection audible et visible.

M+ Cinema brings Super 8 filmmaker and poet Helga Fanderl for an engaging masterclass, the German artist will screen a selection of her silent shorts and expand upon her extensive experience with film as an artistic medium. Unique in her field, Fanderl will share insights into her intuitive artistic process, her iconic in-camera editing, and her incessant quest to find the appropriate cinematic form for her sensory and conceptual inspirations. Other topics will include her expertise in site-specific presentations, whether in traditional cinemas, art galleries, or ephemeral screening structures, and how she curates and performs her always-intimate programmes for the audience.
The films will be presented in their original Super 8 format, as well as in 16mm blow-ups. The masterclass will be moderated by M+ Lead Curator of Moving Image Silke Schmickl and Curator of Moving Image Chanel Kong. With special thanks to the German Consulate General Hong Kong.

Wir laden Sie und Ihre Freund*innen herzlich zu der Buchpräsentation und Filmvorführung Konstellationen Super 8(Hatje Cantz Verlag) ein. Helga Fanderl stellt im Gespräch mit Hanns Zischler ihr Buch und ihre Arbeiten vor.
In Helga Fanderls Filmarbeiten gibt es keine Postproduktion, ihre Kamera ist handgehalten, die – zumeist dreiminütigen – Filme entstehen während des Filmens mittels Kameraschnitt. Die Arbeit der Filmkünstlerin wird erstmals in dieser von ihr präzise komponierten Monografie dokumentiert: Mit reichem Bild- und Textmaterial gibt das Buch Einblick in die ästhetische Besonderheit und Komplexität von Helga Fanderls Arbeit mit Super 8. Entstehung und Entwicklung, Prozess und Materialität sowie Form und poetische Anmutung dieser Praxis werden hier erläutert. Réalisés en Super 8 et montés directement dans la caméra, les films d’Helga Fanderl capturent par le simple moyen du cadrage et de la lumière, l’instant où ses sujets filmés – ou encore le temps – se chorégraphient eux-mêmes. Présente dans les collections du Musée national d’art moderne avec un ensemble de ses films Super 8 agrandis en 16mm, la cinéaste a conçu un programme unique pour cette séance, qui sera suivie d’un échange avec Philippe-Alain Michaud, conservateur en chef du service cinéma expérimental, et d’une signature du livre Helga Fanderl. Konstellationen Super 8 qui vient de paraître chez Hatje Cantz.« Mes films Super 8 évoquent la permanence de l’impermanent. Je découvre les sujets en me promenant avec une petite caméra. Je les trouve, ils me trouvent. La pratique du tourné-monté permet un dialogue spontané et intense avec ce qui m’inspire à faire un film dont la durée se limite à la longueur d’une cartouche Super 8 d’environ 3 minutes. J’ai appris à accepter la forme brève qui préserve le geste et l’unité du montage fait dans la caméra, la chronologie des prises de vue de scènes quotidiennes et leurs rythmes tels qu’ils surgissent et disparaissent devant l’œil de la caméra. Je présente les films sous forme de « compositions » qui changent. Pour la durée d’une séance, chaque combinaison de films devient un seul « film » éphémère, un tissu riche de correspondances et de contrastes entre les thèmes, couleurs, rythmes et textures. Le film individuel s’ouvre ainsi à une interprétation et à une compréhension nouvelles. Les variations possibles sont innombrables. Le plus petit format de cinéma a été créé pour les amateurs et l’espace privé. À cause de la luminosité réduite de la lampe du projecteur Super 8 je préfère projeter à partir de la salle. J’aime également transformer des espaces autres en cinéma temporaires. Le ronronnement du projecteur accompagne les rythmes visuels des films silencieux. Je projette de la même façon aussi les agrandissements en 16 mm d’originaux Super 8 dont je ne peux plus avoir des copies. Cette pratique rend visible l’aspect matériel du film et de sa projection. » Helga FanderlHelga Fanderl (1947, vit et travaille entre Berlin et Paris) a étudié le cinéma, entre autres, avec Peter Kubelka à la Städelschule de Francfort, et avec Robert Breer à la Cooper Union of the Arts à New York. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, elle a réuni un corpus d’environ mille courts-métrages filmés en Super 8, qu’elle présente dans le monde entier à l’occasion de programmes uniques ainsi que dans des expositions.

Ihre Vorführprogramme, die sie „Kompilationen“ nennt, gestaltet siemeist selbst und das Vorführen übernimmt sie ebenfalls. Eigentlich wollte Fanderl Dichterin werden. Der Zufallwollte es, dass sie Anfang der 80er Jahre den Super 8-Filmkurs von Urs Breitenstein besuchte. Seitdem hat dasFilmen sie nicht mehr losgelassen. Ihre Filme sind Gedichte, statt mit einem Stift dichtet Fanderl mit derKamera. Später studierte sie bei Peter Kubelka und Robert Breer, wo sie den Experimentalfilm kennenlernte.Helga Fanderl „schneidet“ und „montiert“ ihre Filme in der Kamera, sie bearbeitet sie nie nach. The cinema of the German and Chilean filmmakers Ute Aurand, Helga Fanderl, Jeannette Muñoz and Renate Sami is a cinema in the present tense - a cinema of and for the senses stressing the inseparability between filmmaking and living. The volume represents the first publication jointly devoted to their film practices. It takes the hive of mutual support and appreciation that the relationships between these four filmmakers constitutes as its point of departure. The personal and poetic sit side by side with the essayistic and critical. Some texts are born out of real-life encounters, taking the form of letters, diaries and notes, others are the author's individual responses to the films.
The publication is accompanied by a retrospective in five programmes, curated in dialogue with the filmmaker's. It highlights their exchanges and correspondences and offers a distinct view into each filmmaker's work. These are films that denote a feminist generosity, a tolerance and respect for one another and for the environment.
Aurand, Fanderl, Muñoz and Sami have been widely recognized at international festivals such as Berlinale, Oberhausen, NYFF, Media City and Rotterdam.

With the Super8 camera in hand, the artist Helga Fanderl transforms perceptions, thoughts and feelings into short films without sound by means of camera cutting. Image detail, recording speed and rhythm make them in situ and for the moment. Each film reflects the process of its creation. Helga Fanderl shows the films in changing programs. Each combination becomes a separate ephemeral 'film'. In a new context, the single film can be seen and read differently. Some titles: CAROUSEL, WATER PLANTS, LEAVES ON THE GLASS ROOF, CURRENT TANK, PORTRAIT, TEETRINKS, RED CURTAIN. S8 is not a cinema format. That's why Helga Fanderl likes to set up the projector in the room and show off to herself.

Helga Fanderl was born in Germany in 1947 and wanted to be a poet. She studied, and then taught, language and literature, before discovering that film was the appropriate medium for her artistic expression. She found that it was not language, but visual art, that opened the way to a very personal and intense poetic work. Since 1986 she has created a body of work consisting of 1000 short films, shot in Super8 with no postproduction, that she draws from for her screenings. She also carefully constructs her own programs for each occasion & venue, and presents them in person. In this performative talk, she will explain in detail her filmic practice and illustrate it with a series of pieces that she will screen herself in Super8 & 16mm.

CORRESPONDENCES: THE SILENT FILMS OF HELGA FANDERL
German filmmaker Helga Fanderl makes her first visit to Anthology in manyyears to present this specially-selected program drawn from her astoundingly vast body of silent Super-8mm films and 16mm blow-ups (she has made around 1,000 short films since 1986). A onetime student of both Peter Kubelka and Robert Breer, Fanderl makes her work impressionistically and intuitively, in response to the rhythms, forms, textures, and colors she encounters, and always limits herself to in-camera editing, so that each film becomes a reflection of the process of its own creation. Her practice is distinguished as well by her commitment to a particular way of presenting her work in public: generally projecting the films herself from within the screening space, Fanderl conceives of each screening program as a unique ‘montage’ of individual works that together comprise a kind of ephemeral, never-to-be-repeated ‘film’ in their own right (an approach made possible by the sheer multitude of pieces she’s created over the years). The interplay of the varied films with their different motifs and rhythms evokes ever-changing and infinitely diverse correspondences and contrasts, and transforms each screening into a unique performance, more than a fixed presentation.

Since 1986, German artist Helga Fanderl has made hundreds of Super 8mm films, each a silent document of a place, person, or set of visual elements. “Every single film preserves and reflects the traces of its creation, the sensations and emotions I felt in the moment of filming, shaping images, shaping time, always in correspondence with the subject matter.” Fanderl exercises a unique practice in the presentation of her work, tailoring each event to the space and in accord with the way the films were created. For the screening at the National Gallery of Art, Fanderlprojects 16mm blowups of her original small-gauge works over a dozen short silent films selected especially for the Gallery’s audience. They witness the artist’s way of seeing and using the camera as her instrument communing with the subject matter. In the sequence the brief silent films unfold their rhythms and poetic strength.

shape the morphology of what she portrays and capture the genius loci on each trip. Lowder’s
animated networks, however, start with the score and then bring in near and distant colours, which,

In einer Lecture präsentiert die Künstlerin Helga Fanderl mit Super8-Kamera und Filmbeispielen ihre filmische und aufführungspraktische Arbeit und stellt anschließend ein Filmprogramm vor. Ihre über 600 Filme – in der Kamera geschnitten – sind komplexe Dialoge mit den sinnlichen und plastischen Qualitäten der Außenwelt, den Tieren, den Menschen, den Strukturen, dem Licht. Durch ständig und diskret veränderte Bildausschnitte, Zooms, wechselnde Geschwindigkeiten, Wiederholungen, Flickern entsteht eine Wucht, die zugleich stets dem Ephemeren und der kleinen Form verpflichtet bleibt. Mit eigenen Augen blicken und sehen. Mit der Kamera Gegenwärtiges aufnehmen und filmisch vergegenwärtigen. Durch den Sucher schauen, den Blick im Hier und Jetzt konzentrieren. Das Interesse am Gegenstand erkunden und die Filmweise bestimmen, die es sichtbar, fühlbar und denkbar machen kann. Inspiriert filmen: immer in Beziehung mit dem Gegenstand und mit sich bleiben. Im „kritischen Moment der eigenen Sensibilität“ (Joris Ivens) den richtigen Ort für die richtige Einstellung finden. Das Tempo des Films aus dem Erlebnis heraus entwickeln, einen direkten, emotionalen Duktus finden. Das sind einige Aspekte einer Poetik des direkten Filmens mittels Kameraschnitt, die für meine Super 8-Arbeit wichtig sind. Ich möchte die Teilnehmer(innen) des Workshops zu einem aufmerksamen, möglichst persönlichen und freien Filmemachen anregen.

Pareciera que para Helga Fanderl filmar y vivir son la misma cosa. Los cortes se harían entonces de acuerdo al ritmo de los latidos del corazón, cada movimiento de la cámara fluye con la respiración, y cada negro sería un parpadeo. Con un dominio absoluto de la herramienta, la cámara de super 8, y una compenetración con la misma casi sobrenatural, Helga Fanderl ha conseguido un corpus de películas tan delicadas como poderosas y emocionantes. Animales, reflejos en el agua, plantas y árboles, pequeños detalles captados al vuelo en la calle, amigos, actividades cotidianas: motivos sencillos que adquieren una belleza y un aura inefable, fruto de la observación atenta y la comunión con lo que le rodea. Películas espontáneas fruto de un saber ya instintivo, editadas en cámara, dispuestas en ramilletes a modo de sesiones que la misma cineasta compone. Un segundo montaje que dibuja ritmos y resonancias en cada sesión, y que convierten cada proyección en un evento único.
It seems that for Helga Fanderl to film and to live are the same thing. The cuts would then be made according to the rhythm of the heartbeat, each movement of the camera flows with the breath, and each black would be a blink. With an absolute mastery of the super 8 camera, and an almost supernatural rapport with it, Helga Fanderl has achieved a corpus of films as delicate as powerful and exciting. Animals, reflections in the water, plants and trees, small details caught on the fly on the street, friends, daily activities: simple motives that gain a beauty and an ineffable aura, fruit of close observation and communion with what surrounds her. Spontaneous films produced by an already instinctive knowledge, edited in camera, arranged in bouquets as sessions that the same filmmaker composes. A second montage that draws rhythms and resonances in each session, and which make each projection a unique event.

Experimenta, India’s first and only international biennial, will be celebrating experimental film and moving image art in India. This groundbreaking festival that put Indian experimental filmmakers on the international scene is now in its 9th edition. This year the festival will showcase, at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan over 100 films and videos from across the world, host artist talks, special curated programmes and installations over 5 days.
Germany has a major presence at the Festival with no less than 3 eminent film makers in attendance, along with other international curators. Film artist Helga Fanderl will showcase her work along with an artist talk.
Experimenta has established an international reputation for being one of the most cutting-edge festivals of experimental film in the world and continues to play an integral role in showcasing uncompromising, fresh and compelling moving image art from across the globe.

«Je présente un programme composé d’une sélection de 22 films très courts, en Super 8 et en 16 mm. Par un libre jeu de correspondances et de résonances un «film» éphémère et unique prend forme au cours de la projection qui se fait à partir de la salle. Le son du projecteur s’entend. Mes films muets évoquent à la fois la présence de l’objet et la mienne en train de filmer. Je trouve ce que je filme en me promenant avec ma caméra, attentive et réceptive à la réalité. Chaque objet impose au film une forme particulière. Les films captent le moment d’une communication animée et s’inspirent de rythmes trouvés.»
«Je filme de façon concentrée et directe, d’un seul geste. La caméra est l’instrument de création in situ. Il n’y a pas de montage ultérieur. Le film individuel garde la chronologie des prises de vue. Le spectateur partage ainsi mon regard et mes décisions et fait l’expérience intense d’un cosmos filmique où il peut facilement perdre la notion habituelle du temps et de l’espace.»

«For Fanderl the film is born out of the act of recording, with a certain immediacy, with the hand-held super 8 camera (some being later blown up to 16mm) and all are edited in the act of filming — the so called "in camera" technique. This limitation, particularly with super 8, provides a certain formal palette from which the decisions of the filmmaker can evolve within, whilst simultaneously reacting very intuitively to the outside.»

Kumu Art Film Festival: Focus on Helga Fanderl

From 4 to 7 June 2015, the first Kumu Art Film Festival will take place, which is also the first cultural event in Estonia to focus on the relationship between film and the visual arts. During the four days of KuFF, documentary, staged and experimental art and artist’s films will be screened in the Kumu auditorium. The film-makers are all connected to the visual arts in one way or another and they reveal this relationship in their films. This can mean focusing on the pictorial language of film and its dislocation, documenting the internal life of the art world, combining film and video art strategies.

«Helga Fanderl is a film artist, who captures the experienced moment. – Her films are created exclusively in the camera. The turning on and switching off is the cut. There is no later montage or postproduction. The films are in Super 8 format and without sound. The focus lies on the creation of the film during the filming. The alienation by cinematic means transforms familiar images and impressions into a Terra Incognita which has to be discovered.»
«In the installation The Color Run and in two Film Live programmes film as film the screening itself is the central theme. (...) the operating of the film projector, the change of the film reels, the focusing of the image and the adjustment of the framer, the program introduction by the artist as well as the following conversations about her films become a performative act and at the same time part of the shown Super 8 program.»
«Von Marieluise Fleißers modischen Vorlieben zeugt eine erstaunliche Sammlung von Stoffcoupons, Knöpfen, Kleidern, Kostümen und Hüten. Helga Fanderl geht der eigenwilligen Ästhetik dieses Nachlasses nach, der für ihre Filmaufnahmen aus Schränken, Koffern, Schachteln und Tüten an die Luft gebracht und bewegt wurde. Hüte fliegen, Farben und Muster der Stoffe scheinen auf und verschwinden. Knöpfe tanzen, Kleider schaukeln im Baum oder fallen wie Blätter.
